What is the Golden Triangle in India?
The Golden Triangle is one of the most popular tourist routes in India. It’s made up of three of some of the most iconic places to visit in India: Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. On the map, these cities make up a triangle, so hence the name “Golden Triangle.”
Many people who are traveling to India choose to follow the Golden Triangle because it covers some of the biggest attractions in the country. It’s about 200-250 kilometers long and there are so many ways you can plan your itinerary around it.
There is no “one way” to do the Golden Triangle. You can decide how much time you want to spend, the order you want to see things, and literally everything. The Golden Triangle really just means a trip that includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
Delhi, Capital City of India
Delhi is often the starting and ending point for travelers on the Golden Triangle, India. It’s the capital and you’ll also fly into the international airport there. You can also fly into Jaipur, but usually Delhi has the cheapest flights (at least if you are coming from Europe or the US).
There are a lot of things to do in Delhi! Some of the most popular spots include the Red Fort, the Qutab Minar, and the Lotus Temple. It’s a beautiful city to explore old sites and get a peek into metropolitan life in India.
You can really spend several days here seeing all the various sites. It’s easy to get around in Delhi with rickshaws or Uber. There’s also a ton of nice hotels and food options.
Agra, Visit the Taj Mahal
Agra is a smaller city in Uttar Pradesh. It’s home to the famous Taj Mahal! The Taj Mahal is recognized worldwide and is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It’s seriously one of the most beautiful structures I’ve ever seen!
You can explore the gardens around the Taj Mahal and also walk through the inside. Since it’s arguably the most iconic place in India, it can be pretty crowded with tourists. Still, it’s definitely worth experiencing!
You can also visit Agra Fort which is a huge complex and fun to explore. You can see what life was like for the Mughal emperors back in the day. I also recommend attending a theatrical performance about the Taj Mahal. Mohabbat the Taj is one of the most famous. It’s a fun way to learn about the history of the Taj Mahal and learn about the culture.
Agra can be visited in 1-2 days depending on what you’re interested in. For more ideas, check out these 11 Places to Visit in Agra Beyond the Taj Mahal.
Jaipur, India’s “Pink City”
Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan and is famous for its rich culture. It’s known as the “Pink City” because many of the buildings are pink which was chosen as a symbol of hospitality. The city is famous for its stunning palaces, fortresses and the unique culture and traditions of the region.
Some of the most popular places to visit in Jaipur include Amer Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) and Jantar Mantar, an old astronomical observatory that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s also a lot of beautiful markets and Rajasthan is particularly famous for their handicrafts, jewelry and textiles.
Jaipur is really a city that highlights the vibrant and colorful culture of India. The country as a whole is really diverse and varies anywhere you travel. But Jaipur stands out for it’s rich culture and there’s a lot of amazing things you can see in the city.
It’s worth spending at least a few days minimum to explore to city. For more ideas on what to do, check out these 19 Must-See Places to Visit in Jaipur.
Best time to visit the Golden Triangle, India
The best time to visit the Golden Triangle is between October through March. July-September is monsoon season, so if you travel during that time you should expect daily rain. It’s completely doable, but the rain can put a damper on plans since a lot of exploring is outside and seeing different landmarks.
It begins to get hot in March and May-June is extreme heat. Keep in mind Jaipur is in the desert! It gets hot in most places around India during this time and it’s considered “summer,” but it’s really hot around the Golden Triangle area especially. The heat can really affect how enjoyable your trip is because you’ll spend so much time outside.
It’s also worth mentioning that December and January can also get quite cold at night and in the mornings. It’s a cool temperature in the daytime, but you’ll need to pack for cold weather too if you’re traveling then.
How to Travel the Golden Triangle: Tour Packages, Independent Travel, Planning Your Trip
Golden Triangle India Tour Packages
There are many tour packages that you can find to take you around the Golden Triangle India. They offer different durations and experiences so it’s easy to find one that fits best with your schedule and timing. Prices also vary a lot depending on how long you’re going and what all you want to include.
If you’re someone who hasn’t traveled much before or prefers having someone else make plans, then a tour is a great option. India can be a little overwhelming for first-time travelers and there’s a lot to plan in order to see all three cities. Tours will plan everything out including transportation, stay, tickets to attractions and still allow you free time to explore on your own.
Planning a Trip Yourself
I’ve never been one to travel with a tour package, so it can be done either way! If you are planning the trip yourself, you can decide how long you want to stay in each city, where you want to stay and what attractions you want to see. I like this freedom personally!
The main way people get between the three cities is either by car or by train. You can hire a private driver which is the easiest way and what I would recommend. There are also buses though too.
To help with planning, here’s about how much time you’ll need to get between each city:
Delhi to Agra: Car is 3-4 hours, train is 2-3 hours
Agra to Jaipur: Car is 4-5 hours, train is 4-5 hours
Jaipur to Delhi: Car is 5-6 hours, train is 4–5 hours
How many days for the Golden Triangle in India?
I would highly recommend a minimum of 7 days for the Golden Triangle! If you really want to be able to see all of the sights and not be completely rushed every day, you’ll need 7 days at least. 5 days might be possible, but every day will be jam-packed. In my experience, it’s much more fun to not feel rushed and exhausted at the end of each day!
In any case, I can understand for some people there is just no option of 7 days or longer, so I’m sharing some recommended ideas depending on the time you have. Of course these are just ideas to help you plan your own trip!

Useful Tips for Travelers
What to Wear & How to Pack
Overall, India is a relatively modest country compared to many western cultures. Major cities tend to be less modest compared to smaller towns, and places along the Golden Triangle are very accustomed to seeing tourists.
It’s completely normal and expected for travelers to wear western clothes, even locals do. Men can generally wear anything. Women should avoid low-cut tops and short shorts. Ladies it’s fine to wear tank tops and dresses, but pants are most common. If you do wear something that reveals more skin, just expect a lot of stares from men which can be a bit uncomfortable.
For a deeper look into what to wear, check out What to Wear in India: A Comprehensive Guide for Travelers. Of course, the time of year will also impact how you pack. Be prepared for whatever season you’re traveling in, be it heat, cold or rain! Aside from that, there’s nothing particularly special you’ll need to pack other than what you normally would for a vacation. This Ultimate India Packing List can be helpful to make sure you don’t forget anything!
Getting Around in the Cities
You can find rickshaws across the Golden Triangle. However, be prepared to negotiate for a price as you’ll probably be given higher prices as a foreigner. I recommend using Uber which works easily and the destination is already shown to the driver so you don’t need to try to explain anything. There is also Ola which is similar to Uber but an Indian company.
Money, Bargaining and (NO) Tipping
You should carry around cash which can easily be taken out at an ATM in the airport or around the city. Most places also accept cards like hotels and restaurants. Cash is nice though for shopping in a market and small purchases you might make along the trip.
GPay is also very popular for making purchases electronically, but you need to set up the app on your phone which can be difficult for travelers that are only in India for a short time.
Speaking of money, when you are shopping in markets or buying souvenirs along the street, be prepared to bargain! Bargaining is a normal part of the culture and is expected.
As a tourist, you will be told extra high prices which may not even seem expensive if you’re coming from a country like the US. But still, you can bargain for yourself. I usually start by counter-offering 50% of whatever they say and going up from there.
A note about tipping, it’s not the norm! Many restaurants will include a 10% service charge on their bill. But there’s no need to tip beyond that. You will never need to tip at any restaurant or driver. If you’re doing a guided tour, you can offer a tip in that case but a large amount isn’t required.
Language
Locals will know Hindi between Agra, Delhi and Jaipuir. Many people in Jaipur will also speak Rajasthani, although that won’t make much of any difference to travelers.
Since these places are so touristy, most people speak English or at least enough basic English to communicate with travelers. Language won’t be much of a challenge in these cities!
Safety
The Golden Triangle is known to be safe for tourists. People are very welcoming and excited to interact with you. Overall, just take the regular precautions you would at home and you’ll have a fun experience!
Off-Beat Attractions Along the Way
Ranthambore National Park: This park is famous for its tiger reserve and is situated between Agra and Jaipur only slightly out of the way. You can spend a day and enjoy a safari here.
Fatehpur Sikri: This is an abandoned city outside of Agra. It’s a nice place to explore and see old palaces, mosques and structures from the old emperors.
Jodhpur: Jodhpur is nicknamed the “Blue City” and is a popular destination in Rajasthan. It’s about 6 hours east of Jaipur and is a beautiful city to explore! If you have the extra time, you can travel from Jaipur to Jodhpur and then stop in Bikaner on your way back to Delhi. Bikaner is another interesting Rajasthani city!
