My husband and I are lucky enough to spend our days traveling around India now and have taken countless trips in the past seven years. Since we spend so much time traveling, we never had a trip which we officially called our “honeymoon,” but we jokingly have called many trips that!
This list is made of the top places we would recommend for couples traveling in India and wanting a bit of romance among adventure and relaxation. We hope you’ll find a place that suits you best and have an incredible trip!
This post is all about Indian honeymoon destinations.
Why choose India as a honeymoon destination?
India is a truly incredible option for a honeymoon! It’s extremely diverse and famous for its rich culture across the country. There’s also all kinds of different landscapes from mountains to beaches that are perfect for newlyweds to unwind and explore together! There’s really so much to do and depending on the type of couple you are, you can find something to fit your vibe.
Of course I would say the experience of traveling in India is unbeatable, but one other factor is money. India is a super cheap place to travel! Once you’re here, you can find really cost efficient options for accommodations, and food and travel are really inexpensive. You can travel for longer too because it’s not as much money as traveling in other places, especially western countries.
Top Indian Honeymoon Destinations
#1 Rajasthan (Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur)
Rajasthan is a well-known spot for travelers and is a great Indian honeymoon destination for people wanting a cultural or royal experience! Rajasthan is a state in India which is famous for its vibrant culture and rich history of royalty.
Many cities around Rajasthan are absolutely beautiful (and make for absolutely gorgeous photo opportunities!). It’s an adventure where you’ll get to learn about and experience the culture more than any other place in India! There’s also some amazing places and resorts to stay for some time alone, including in old palaces!
Jaipur is known as the “Pink City” as much of the architecture is pink from when buildings were painted to welcome the old Prince of Wales. There are a lot of iconic places to visit in Jaipur like Amber Fort and the Hawa Mahal.
Udaipur is another beautiful city known as the “City of Lakes.” You can enjoy romantic boat rides and there are some really nice luxurious resorts here, including The Oberoi Udaivilas and the Taj Lake Palace.
Jodhpur is another city in Rajasthan which is nicknamed, “The Blue City.” Similar to Jaipur, many of the buildings are painted blue and it’s a beautiful contrast to the surrounding desert.
If you are wanting to make your honeymoon more about exploring the most famous sites of India, the Golden Triangle is a popular route that travelers follow which includes Jaipur along with Delhi and the Taj Mahal.
But overall, Rajasthan is a beautiful and vibrant place to visit with a majestic setting for a honeymoon!
#2 Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the ideal honeymoon destination for people wanting beautiful, clear-water beaches! Honestly, I feel like it’s the more affordable version of Maldives. It’s absolutely beautiful and a great place for newlyweds to relax and spend time together.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a mix of relaxation and adventure. The most famous beach, Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, is renowned for its stunning sunset views and silky white sands, making it a perfect spot for couples to unwind. The islands also offer excellent opportunities for water sports, including scuba diving and snorkeling, where couples can explore vibrant coral reefs and a diverse range of marine life.
Beyond the beaches, the islands are rich in history and culture. The Cellular Jail in Port Blair, a colonial prison used by the British, is a famous site that tells the story of India’s struggle for independence. This isn’t exactly romantic by any means, but it’s a really interesting place to go and you learn a lot.
As someone who loves the beach, this is my most recommended honeymoon destination in India! The beaches are just phenomenal and it’s a beautiful place to relax and enjoy yourself.
#3 Shimla and Manali
Shimla and Manali are two different towns up north towards the Himalayas. They are famous for their stunning mountain scenery, cool climate and friendly atmosphere. Hence, they are perfect for couples that want a mix of adventure and coziness!
Shimla used to be the summer capital of British India and the colonial architecture is really cute. There’s a famous strip called Mall Road with lots of small shops and cafes. There’s also a place called the Ridge where you can see panoramic views of the mountains. Shimla is actually known in India as being a top honeymoon destination! If you want a more secluded trip, there are many small villages outside, like Fagu, where you can stay. We stayed at this Airbnb surrounded by apple orchids and it was one of my favorite stays I’ve ever had in India!
Manali is a little more tucked away in the mountains and similarly has picturesque scenes with lush forests. There are more outdoor activities here like trekking, paragliding and rafting. You can also visit Solang Valley and Beas River.
Shimla and Manali are great Indian honeymoon destinations for people wanting to snuggle up in the mountains and appreciate the views! They are cute, little cities with fun markets and restaurants to explore alongside nature.
#4 Kashmir
Kashmir is a dream destination for tourists and an incredibly romantic spot for honeymooners! Situated on the northern border of India, Kashmir is famous for its stunning landscapes and it’s absolutely breathtaking.
One of the most popular places to visit in Kashmir is Dal Lake. You can find beautiful accommodations here with views of the peaceful waters and snow capped mountains. It’s one of the most picturesque places I have traveled to in India if I’m being honest!
There are many places in Kashmir which are beautiful and worth visiting. You can also check out Gulmarg and Pahalgam for a cable car ride and hiking spots. Overall, it’s a beautiful Indian honeymoon destination where people make you feel welcome and you can enjoy the natural beauty while relaxing or indulging in some stunning hikes.
#5 Pondicherry
Pondicherry is a town on the southeastern coast of India. It’s a bit of an off-beat option for honeymooners, but I think it’s a great place to explore as a couple and I love traveling there with my husband! It’s known for its French colonial architecture and beaches. The town has a lot of cute little boutiques and cafes to explore.
With the French influence, you can find a lot of adorable places to stay in Pondicherry. Many of the old mansions have been converted into guest houses now and there are luxurious options as well. These are some of my recommended Pondicherry Resorts to check out.
Just outside of Pondicherry is a community called Auroville. It’s an experimental township that’s all about sustainable living and human unity. They have organic farms and a wide range of various workshops you can do for fun. They also have the Matrimandir which is a large golden temple that’s surrounded by a beautiful walking path.
Pondicherry and Auroville are fun Indian honeymoon destinations and are unlike any other places in India! There are many expats who live and travel here (especially from France). There are a lot of fun things you can do while also enjoying time together during your stay!
#6 Kerala (Kochi, Munnar)
Kerala is a beautiful state on the southern coast of India. It’s famous for its rich culture and natural beauty with lush landscapes and waterways. Kochi is a city in Kerala which I’d recommend to travelers and Munnar is a smaller town inland among the hills.
One of the biggest draws to Kerala are the backwaters. You can cruise around on traditional houseboats to enjoy the peaceful scenery of nature and pass small villages to see life for locals. This was my favorite thing to do in Kerala and we took boats from Kochi. It’s a fun experience for honeymooners and a relaxing ride.
Munnar is a hill station that’s famous for its tea plantations and rolling hills. It’s a very peaceful atmosphere and would be a great getaway from the typical city life. You can do tours of plantations and hang out while enjoying the views. It’s also cooler since it’s up in the hills.
If you have enough time, you can combine a trip to Munnar along with Kochi or another place to visit the backwaters. You can also check out these top 9 Places to Visit in Kerala. It’s really a fun honeymoon destination full of beautiful views and unique experiences!
#7 Darjeeling
Darjeeling is another well-known Indian honeymoon destination in the mountains! It’s in West Bengal on the foothills of the Himalayas and offers a romantic setting that’s perfect for newlyweds. The atmosphere is very laid back and it’s a nice escape away.
The town has a blend of many cultures like Tibetan, Nepali and British influences. It makes for a unique cultural experience where you can visit monasteries or explore tea estates. Darjeeling tea is actually famous around the world! It’s a cute place to visit with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
Darjeeling is a great destination for honeymooners that want a mix of relaxation and adventure. The weather is cool and there are beautiful treks to explore. There’s also a lot of cute options for accommodations that are cozy and ideal for couples!
#8 Goa
Goa is the perfect Indian honeymoon destination for beach lovers! It’s a mix of sunshine, sea, relaxation and a little adventure if you’re interested in that. It’s one of the top destinations in India for travelers, so it’s common to see other expats there and it’s well-suited for tourists.
Goa is a state situated on the eastern coast along the Arabian Sea. It used to be under Portuguese rule, so you still see a lot of influence from the colonial times. There are a ton of different beaches and towns you can choose to visit, all with a laid back beachy vibe!
It’s a great option for a honeymoon where you can enjoy candlelit dinners on the coast every night. Since it’s also accustomed to having so many outside travelers, it’s not as modest as other parts of India. Most of the days can be spent lounging on the beach or relaxing at a resort. If you like a little more thrill, there are water sports like surfing and hiking spots to waterfalls more inland.
