I have traveled to Pondicherry several different times while living in India, and I always plan to visit again! It’s a unique place and I also enjoy taking different workshops in Auroville which is nearby.

Pondicherry is a lot of fun and there’s always things to do! Having seen all of the typical tourist sites, I put together this list of some unique ways to enjoy Pondicherry.

This list is all about unique things to do in Pondicherry.

Unique Things to Do in Pondicherry

#1 Explore the Ancient Archeological Site, Arikamedu

Arikamedu is a stunning archeological site that is perfect for explorers, families, and anyone interested in history! This site is believed to have been an important trading port dating back to the 1st century BC to 2nd century AD. It’s most famous for the connection with the Roman Empire.

Visitors can explore the Arikamedu and learn about the history and cultures that were present there. You can see artifacts like pottery, beads, lamps and Roman coins. Because of the Roman artifacts found, it’s believed that the Tamils and Roman had a great relationship through trading.

It’s likely that this port was a hub for exchanging things like spices, gemstones and textiles. Scientists have also found Buddhist relics and artifacts, suggesting the presence of Buddhist communities in the region. This is definitely one of the most unique things to do in Pondicherry!

#2 Spend the night in a restored colonial mansion

Pondicherry has such a rich history, especially due to French colonization. Many of the old colonial villas have been restored as resorts or hotels for travelers.

This is one of the most fun and unique ways to soak in the architecture and decor of the colonial era. Many stays have modern amenities but have modeled the buildings to look like they would have back in that time. It’s a great way to experience the history first hand and enjoy a relaxing stay at a beautiful hotel.

There are a lot of great options to choose from, but I’d highly recommend La Villa located in the French Quarter. It’s a beautifully restored mansion with only six rooms! The staff are very friendly and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee in the courtyard, relax by the pool or try any of their amazing locally-sourced dishes.

#3 Enjoy panoramic views from the top of Pondicherry Lighthouse

There are two lighthouses in Pondicherry. The old lighthouse is not accessible, but you can visit the outside and enjoy the garden around it. The new lighthouse in Pondicherry is open and gives a unique view of the city and coastline!

Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs to reach the top of the lighthouse, but it’s totally worth it! The top of the lighthouse is covered but still open so you can see all around from 360 degrees. Despite being open to visitors, this spot is lesser known and much less crowded than the major tourist spots in the city.

If you’re wanting the perfect place to get unique views of the coast, this should be one of your top things to do in Pondicherry!

#4 Learn pottery and sculpt your own souvenir

If you spend time around Pondicherry and Auroville, you will notice that there are several pottery studios and shops selling local work. You don’t have to be a professional or even have any experience to try out pottery during your stay in Pondicherry!

Enso Creative Space is a great place to learn the basics because they offer 2 hour classes for beginners. They can teach and model for you how to make various items from bowls to elephants and owls. Plus, you get to take home your creation which makes for the perfect souvenir!

Whether you’d consider yourself to be a clay expert or you’ve never even seen a potter’s wheel, this is one of the most fun things to do in Pondicherry! I had never done pottery before and had such a great experience here that I’d highly recommend it.

#5 Paddle boat or kayak on Ousteri Lake

Ousteri Lake is outside the main city hub and is also known as Osudu Lake. It’s a great getaway for people looking to connect with nature and enjoy some time outdoors. It’s also a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Rent a paddle boat or kayak and enjoy a day out on the water! Ousteri Lake is also a great spot for bird watching and photography. It has a very peaceful and serene atmosphere and there’s not usually very many people.

This is one of the best things to do in Pondicherry for nature enthusiasts or anyone looking to escape the city for a while and enjoy the views of the lake!

#6 Rent a bicycle and ride around the French Quarter

The French Quarter is a popular and famous area of Pondicherry. The architecture is beautiful and there are dozens of cute cafes, shops and galleries. Rent a bicycle for a fun and different way to enjoy the scenes.

Along the way, you can stop for treats or enjoy a cold drink. The French Quarter is bike friendly, so you don’t need to worry about the heavy traffic like other parts of the city. Many of the roads are even closed off for vehicles to access.

This is a great way to get a bit active and experience life in the French Quarter!

#7 Have a picnic at Veerampattinam Beach

Veerampattinam Beach is one of the many beaches in Pondicherry, but this one is less frequented by tourists which makes it the perfect spot for a picnic! It’s not very crowded and has a relaxing vibe compared to the main Pondicherry Beach which is super lively and busy.

Grab some of your favorite snacks or pick up some sandwiches from a local cafe and find a cozy spot! You can enjoy your dinner on the beach and avoid the midday heat, or even stop out for a morning breakfast and sunrise on the coast.

This is a perfect activity for couples, families or even solo travelers! Enjoy the views of the Bay of Bengal while chilling on the coast and enjoying a meal.

#8 Channel your inner-Frenchness and bake croissants

While in Pondicherry, it’s no doubt you will see and feel the French influence in the area. There are a lot of beautiful cafes and eateries full of delicious baked goods!

Spend a day learning how to bake traditional french items like croissants, or other delicious desserts and breads! It’s a fun way to spend time with family and friends or learn something new while traveling solo. Plus, of course you get to eat what you bake too!

The Lotus Creative one time baking classes that are perfect for beginners or even people with plenty of experience who are looking for a fun time. It’s run by Sarita who is super sweet and will teach you with all the best advice. You can practice baking a lot of different things like macaroons, breads, cakes, pastries, and more. She also offers larger packages for people who want to learn more in-depth.

#9 Offer a prayer at Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswar Temple

Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswar Temple is a beautiful and historically significant temple in Pondicherry. It’s a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and also houses a shrine of Goddess Paravati. It’s a large space full of mythological scenes and next to a pool of water.

This temple is especially popular in May and June where there is a full moon festival. Devotees carry a huge chariot with deities around the town and it’s a huge celebration.

There is also a legend about the temple that dates back to the 12th century. It’s said that the king was suffering from leprosy and in that spot he prayed to Lord Shiva to be cured. He then recovered and built the temple to honor Lord Shiva for helping him.

Visit the temple to partake in a daily puja or offer a prayer as you enjoy the scenery of the temple.

#10 Make your own henna and learn popular patterns

Henna (or Mehendi as it’s known in India) is popular throughout the country, especially for major events like weddings. You can get beautiful designs that will stay for 1-2 weeks without any damage to your skin.

The Sita Cultural Center offers workshops where you can learn how to make your own mehendi paste and practice making different patterns and styles. It’s a fun way to learn about where henna comes from, how it’s made and decorate your own body!

Mehendi is only one of the many events offered at the Sita Cultural Center. If you have the time, be sure to check out their other workshops and performances! You can learn Bollywood dancing, yoga, cooking, how to wear sarees, create flower garlands, and learn to draw Kalam patterns (the famous and colorful designs made from rice powders). It’s a great place to explore.

#11 Go stargazing on Serenity Beach

With so many fun things to do in Pondicherry, you can unwind by spending a quiet evening stargazing at the beach. Serenity Beach is towards the direction of Auroville and is a quiet section on the Bay of Bengal. As the name suggests, it’s a peaceful place and away from the city lights so it’s perfect for stargazing.

Bring a blanket and chill out on the coast while listening to the sound of waves. If you have a telescope, that can make for an even more special experience! I assume you’re like most travelers and don’t just carry one with you, but I use an app called SkyView Lite which is free and is super cool to use. It will help you identify different stars, constellations and planets.

This is the perfect way to spend a night along the coast and enjoy the views of the earth and sky!
